Valentines Hearing – Giving A Hearing Gift

Q:  My husband knows he misses words and phrases here and there.  He needs the TV to be fairly loud, and often laughs off a question or comment when he doesn’t hear it right.  Can I buy him some hearing aids as a Valentine’s Day gift?

A:  Helping someone hear better is a lovely, heart felt gift.  While you could certainly buy your husband hearing aids, the bigger question is how to help and support him to use them.

When it comes to using hearing aids, some people have an unexplainable resistance to them. So even though your husband knows he doesn’t hear well at times, it does not mean he’s prepared to use hearing aids.

Start with a supportive conversation.  Encourage him to get a baseline hearing test.  Go with him so you understand the results and the options that might help him.  Mostly, let him know you support him and want him to enjoy the benefits of hearing more clearly.

Call some Austin hearing centers and find out what their new patient appointments are like.  If the first one doesn’t quite answer all of your questions, schedule a 2nd opinion and get the information you are looking for.
