The Right Age for Hearing Aids

Q.   I know hearing loss is just one more natural process of getting older.  I’m 63.  At what age will I want to consider getting hearing aids?

A.  It may sound clichéd, but hearing aids are ageless.  The question to ask yourself is how much will you benefit when you wear hearing aids.  A person of any age who can benefit from hearing better with hearing aids should at least try them for a few weeks.

At any age, hearing loss impacts a person on numerous levels.  Hearing loss creates physical and emotional stress and strain.  A person’s self confidence and social interactions are negatively impacted.  Hearing loss curtails memory and understanding.  These changes are usually subtle and subversive.  On top of these impacts, the people around you are affected by the loss as well.

Are you asking people to repeat things more than you used to?  Are you mishearing phrases and words?  Do you smile and nod without truly understanding what someone said?  Do you avoid certain events, situations or people because it’s hard to understand when you are there?  Do you need more volume on the TV or radio than others do?  Please get your hearing tested.
