Invisible Hearing Aids – Part 2 of 2

Q:  I do not want anyone to see me wearing hearing aids.  Are there hearing aids available that cannot be seen?

A:  Short answer, yes.  Longer answer, there are daily and long-term invisible hearing aids.  Last week I discussed the daily versions.

Long term hearing aids are ones that are placed deeply into the canal and left there for numerous weeks and months at a time.  The Phonak Lyric is currently the only available long-term hearing aid.  The Lyric has the benefit of being absolutely invisible and can be worn 24-7.   They are available in numerous sizes to match your canal size.

Since the Lyric is worn deeply in the canal over a long period of time (generally 2-3 months), they are not for people with narrow or sensitive canals, heavy wax production, severe to profound hearing loss, a history of ear-related medical issues or those who use blood thinner or swim underwater or dive.

The Lyric uses older technology to conserve battery power.  There is no volume control or mute button.  When the battery runs out, your hearing specialist will remove the old aid and insert a new one.  Using long-term hearing aids is based on a subscription for a specified period of time, generally a 2-year minimum.
