Q. I bought some new hearing aids at an Austin-area Walmart last month so I would finally hear the holidays better for the first time in years. But I hear way too much. Every day I turn the hearing aids down to the point where they don’t do any good. Is this normal?
A. Over the counter amplifiers like the ones you bought at Walmart will make everything around you equally louder. So it comes as no surprise you are more comfortable with the amplifiers turned way down.
For most people with hearing loss, only certain softer elements of voices need to be enhanced to hear them much more clearly. A thorough ear exam and hearing test allows a hearing center to adjust the sound settings on hearing aids for each person’s unique needs. This way the world sounds clearer and easier to understand. It doesn’t sound too loud.
With your amplifiers, you might try wearing just one. More so, I would recommend making an appointment at a proper hearing center for a hearing test, then listen to their true hearing aids.
In the midst of this pandemic, we rely even more on our connections with family, neighbors and friends to provide us with a sense of place, purpose, and community. Hearing them better is critical. I hope you are soon able to hear as well as you would like to.
Call us at the Better Hearing Center of Austin for a thorough, well explained ear and hearing exam. You will also listen to new hearing aids at your appointment.
