Q: Should I be concerned if I don’t correct my hearing?
A: Hearing better is in fact healthier for you! The National Council on Aging conducted a recent study with over 2,300 hearing impaired adults. By far, the study found that those with untreated hearing loss were more likely to report a variety of serious issues such as depression, anxiety, paranoia, and stress. Other reported effects were social isolation, reduced participation, and reduced earning power. Less hearing means less interaction. At work this means performance suffers, which results in fewer promotions and less pay.
On the flip side, treating hearing loss can reduce these negative issues PLUS make a person less likely to develop dementia. In Feb. 2011, Johns Hopkins and the National Institute on Aging published a study which revealed hearing’s connection with dementia. Researchers combed through data for thousands on Americans going back to the early 1960’s to complete the study.
