Q. My family and I enjoy going to the Mueller farmer’s market on Sunday about once a month. The crowds there can get noisy. Are there better ways to use my hearing aids in loud places like that?
A. You have a few options with your hearing aids when you are in a noisy environment. You can simply turn the volume down, or turn them off, to reduce how much of the noise you hear around you. Keep in mind your natural hearing will continue to pick up a certain amount of the noise.
Your hearing center will be able to activate one or more programs you can activate when you need to reduce the amount of noise the hearing aids pick up around you. Ask them to create a setting for moderate background noise and another setting for severe background noise. These same programs can be adjusted to focus the hearing aids on voices in front of you.
Your hearing aids might be able to use your smart phone like an extra hearing aid. If so, you can activate that feature and hold out your phone for someone to talk into.
Call us at the Better Hearing Center of Austin 512-282-4327. We provide thorough, well explained ear check-ups and hearing exams. You can listen to new hearing aids at your appointment and hear how the noise reduction programs sound. You will also receive a 4-week hearing aid trial with follow-up appointments to fully try out hearing aids before you make a final purchase.
