Face Masks Cover Up Hearing

Q.  My Austin-based Heating and AC business has continued to provide service throughout the pandemic.  Our customers wear face masks in their homes and offices when we are on site.  I have a lot more trouble understanding what they say than I used to. Can hearing aids help me hear my customers more clearly?

A.   If you have hearing loss, hearing aids will certainly help clarify what your customers are saying.  Even though face masks cause voices to be muffled, hearing aids will still enhance speech to become more distinct.

Since you had hearing loss and were experiencing difficulty understanding your customers before the pandemic, it is time to get a thorough hearing evaluation and listen to the improvement hearing aids can provide.  Of course, hearing aids will also help you hear more easily and more clearly it all situations, not just when face masks are being worn.

New hearing aids also have settings you can use when you are using noisy equipment or are in a noisy environment.  When you use a smart phone when you talk with customers or employees, you can transmit the call into both hearing aids for even more clarity.

Set up a thorough hearing evaluation.  Make sure the hearing center will allow you to listen to hearing aids based on your loss immediately after your test.  It should be ear opening!
