Resolutions for Better Hearing

Q.  My husband wants me to make a resolution to hear better in 2020.  It feels like if people spoke more clearly, I wouldn’t have any trouble.  What steps should I consider if people actually are speaking clearly, but I am simply not hearing them well enough?

A.  There are three main steps you can take to determine if you have hearing loss, and if so, how to hear better.  First, make an appointment to get your ears and hearing checked.  Second, if you have hearing loss, listen to hearing aids.  Third, if the hearing aids sound good in the office, arrange to wear them for two to four weeks before you decide to purchase them.

Find a well-reviewed hearing center and make an appointment.  The appointment should include an ear check-up and cleaning, if needed.  After your hearing test, they should provide you with a detailed explanation of the results that is easy to understand.  Lastly, during your appointment, they should offer to have you listen to hearing aids that are programmed for your loss.

Your husband has probably been noticing the impact that hearing loss has had on you – reduced social awareness, less accurate conversations, reduced memory, hesitation when responding, asking to repeat what was just said, reduction in confidence, etc.  Mostly, he wants the ‘old you’ back.
