Advanced hearing aids are basic to use

Q.  My husband is uncomfortable with new technology and still uses a 12-year old flip phone.  He knows he needs hearing aids but is worried he will get confused with their Bluetooth features, bells and whistles.  Are there some new, but basic aids available that will not intimidate him so much?

A.  All new hearing aids have numerous Bluetooth features, bells, and whistles.  Many of the features work automatically, so your husband does not need to learn how to activate them.

New hearing aids are able to communicate with a smart phone – but this is not a requirement.  Even though your husband does not use a smart phone, the hearing aids will still function at 100%.

When your husband goes to a hearing center, go with him.  Make sure the staff are aware of your husband’s limited tolerance for new technology.  Ideally, the hearing aid specialist who works with your husband will focus on how much better he hears with the hearing aids on, and how easy the new hearing aids are to use.

Find a hearing center that will allow your husband to listen to hearing aids right after his hearing test.  This way he will get immediate feedback on how well hearing aids will help him.

Call us at the Better Hearing Center of Austin for a complete and thorough appointment.  We put hearing aids on for patients immediately after their hearing test.  We also provide 4-week hearing aid trials so patients can fully test out hearing aids before a purchase.  When you come back for weekly follow-ups during the trial, we provide detailed coaching and support.
