Welcome to the Better Hearing Center of Austin! Our hearing healthcare practice is grounded on providing excellent patient care and thorough information by an expert staff, using the most up-to-date technology and methods available. We are a small, hands-on, family run practice with two cheerful and eager professionals who are focused on helping you hear better.
Hello! I am Saleem. And I am the Better Hearing Center’s clinician. When it comes to hearing, most people are scared stiff about taking the first step to finding out what is happening. The anxiety sometimes comes from past experience with a friend or family member who had hearing loss, or the nervousness comes from the general feeling in society that hearing loss is somehow shameful. Because the wide majority of my patients express their gratitude for the unpressured education they receive during their appointment, I have come to believe most people with hearing loss are worried they will be hood-winked into a hearing device they don’t want, don’t understand, and won’t use! My main goal is to provide thorough information in all appointments with new or long-term patients, so they are confident and comfortable with their hearing healthcare decisions.
One promise I made to myself and my family when I opened the Better Hearing Center was to provide a very high level of patient care and service. I am honored to say my patients tell me every week how much better and unique their care is with us than with most of their other healthcare providers. Providing this level of service and care means a great deal to me, and makes a tremendous difference to my patients and their hearing as well! We are always trying out new ways to improve our service and care, too. My patients share improvement ideas, and recipes as well – see the section below on Brenda MacArthur for more information on her baking habits!
A bit about me – I was born in Dallas, which makes me a genuine native-Texas. My entire life has been spent in Texas, except a few years here and there while growing up and during my very early career when I lived overseas in England, France, Germany, and Lebanon. My wife, Lori, and I are genuine high school sweethearts and have two fantastic children, Calianne and Atiyeh. We have lived in Austin since 1998, and love it! Our children spend the occasional afternoon in the office after school and during the summer – so don’t be surprised if you meet them. And if you don’t, you’ll see them in some of the many photos displayed throughout our exam and testing rooms.
Professionally, I have an undergraduate degree from Rice University in Houston, and a graduate business degree from the University of Texas at Austin. I hold my professional license from the state of Texas to practice as a Hearing Instrument Specialist. And I have completed all of my upper division course work to achieve the Audioprosthologist designation from the International Hearing Society and the American Conference on Audioprosthology.
About my name – My father is Lebanese, and my first name means ‘peace’. To pronounce Saleem, just think of the popular singer CELINE DION. My name is pronounced just like hers, except where her name has an ‘N’, put in an ‘M’ and pronounce it like C-E-L-I-M-E. That’s me, Saleem.
Patient Care Coordinator
Brenda is the Better Hearing Center's Patient Care Coordinator (PCC). She is usually the first happy voice and face you see whenever you contact or visit our office. Our patients are constantly remarking about how welcoming and helpful Brenda is with them.
Brenda’s mother is a native of Fredericksburg. And Brenda herself just missed being a native Texan, and was born in Arkansas. She spent many years in Oregon before moving with her family to Austin in 2001. Brenda and her husband, Mike, have lived in South Austin for many years. They also try and keep up with four grown daughters, Ashley, Megan, Shawna and Erika, who occasionally make their way back home. If Brenda seems to be less talkative than usual for some reason, just ask her about her sweet grandchildren and she will brighten right up again!
Brenda is a tour de force at the Better Hearing Center. Not only is she an active member of the Diva Mamas (ask her about it), she’s an active baker! If you are lucky, there will be some of Brenda’s latest baked creation available when you come in for an appointment. Just a few of Brenda’s most enjoyed baked treats are:
- Ann’s ‘Century Old’ No Bake Fruit Cake
- Applesauce Spice Cake
- Banana Bread
- Blueberry Muffins
- Blueberry Crumble Coffee Cake
- Chocolate Dipped Cake Balls
- Cinnamon Chocolate Chip Coffee Cake
- Double Chocolate Brownies
- Mississippi Mud Cake
